Sigurd Leeder - Traces of the dance

Highly acclaimed exhibition at the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich and SAPA Lausanne

In cooperation with the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich, Sigurd Leeder's work was presented to the general public for the first time in 2017. A richly illustrated publication was also published in the context of the exhibition.

In 2010, SAPA received a spectacular addition: the estate of Sigurd Leeder comprises 12,000 documents and objects, earning our institution a place on the list of the world's most important dance archives.

Leeder belonged to the reform movement of expressive dance, but was an autodidact who had acquired his knowledge of expressive movements himself. With photos, films and dance notations, supplemented by costumes and masks, the exhibition shows the vitality of Leeder's art and pedagogy. Present-day interpretations from several countries shed light on its continuing topicality.

The exhibition was shown again at SAPA in Lausanne in 2018, focusing on two areas:

  • The pedagogy section documents the Jooss-Leeder method in the context of dance history.
  • In Danse macabre, a dance work developed in class is made visible in various aspects of its creation, preservation and continued impact.
