THE THEATRE ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF SWITZERLAND

Now archived at SAPA

With over 3,600 entries, the Theaterlexikon provides comprehensive information on theater and dance in Switzerland. It was published in 2005 by Andreas Kotte and the Institute for Theater Studies and appeared as a three-volume reference work by Chronos Verlag Zurich. This was followed in 2012 by retro-digitization and publication in wiki format. Since 2025, the SAPA Foundation has been preserving the digital lexicon in unchanged form and making it accessible via its platform and website - a unique, rich source on the performing arts in Switzerland.

The encyclopaedia contains articles on individuals, groups, venues, institutions, and selected subjects in both professional theatre and dance as well as amateur theatre. It adheres to the principle of multilingualism: entries are written, depending on geographical setting, in German, French, Italian, or Romansh (with German translation). All articles are linked to SAPA’s collections, thereby expanding the dense network of data and information on the performing arts in Switzerland. Enjoy your exploration!
