Matsuda Fumi

Fumi Matsuda completed her training as a gymnastics and dance teacher at universities in Sapporo and Tokyo, including in the field of modern creative dance with Professor Takaya Eguchi, a student of Mary Wigman. Further dance training followed at the Laban Center in London and with Evelyn Rigotti in Wattwil.
She has lived and worked in Zurich as a dancer, choreographer and teacher since 1974. She was a member of Choreo 77 and performed in Claude Perrottet's Tanzforum Zürich. In 1979, she founded her own dance studio and presented her first solo dance evening with pieces such as Auf heissem Sand, Schrei and Punkt ... Circle ... Line .... Matsuda founded the Fumi Matsuda Dance Theatre and realized full-length productions almost every year, with tours in Switzerland, Germany and Japan.
Since 1981, she has held a permanent teaching position at the Schauspiel-Akademie Zürich, later the Hochschule Musik und Theater Zürich (HMT ). In 2003 she was awarded the Swiss Dance and Choreography Prize for her life's work. In 2004, she was the first dancer in Switzerland to be awarded the title of professor together with other lecturers at the HMT.
