Forster received her first dance lessons from Grete Müller and regularly attended intensive courses with Sigurd Leeder in Herisau. She completed further training at summer courses in Switzerland, Cologne and Bonn, as well as at the London School of Contemporary Dance and with Maja Lex at the German Sport University Cologne. From 1977, she frequently spent time in New York, where she completed two semesters at the Nikolais-Louis Dance Lab and cultivated close contacts with the contemporary American dance scene.

Forster danced with the Bernese group Akar and in the May O'Donnell Repertory Group in New York. After gaining her SBTG diploma, she founded The Dance Experience in Basel, where she taught, organized workshops and performances and founded the Tanz im Wenken festival in Riehen. Forster also worked as a dance critic for the Basler Zeitung, wrote for various publications, gave lectures on dance education and dance history, was editor of the magazine Tanz & Gymnastik and was active in the news editorial team of Der Tanz der Dinge.
