Schumann Erwin

Erwin Schumann began his career by studying psychology before devoting himself to dance training. His artistic development was shaped by a broad spectrum of influences: classical ballet, breathing and relaxation techniques as well as the methods of Alwin Nikolais and Merce Cunningham. He also studied movement theater according to Jerzy Grotowski and music theory.
Schumann danced as a soloist at the Ballet Moderno de Guatemala and continued his training in the USA with renowned teachers such as José Limón and Jennifer Muller. In Switzerland, he began his teaching career as a modern and improvisation teacher at the Scuola Teatro Dimitri in Verscio.
In 1979, he founded the Tamuté Company Dance Theater in Zurich, which presented full-length productions every year. These works combined dance, music, theater and visual arts into a unique, personal unity that always dealt with current issues. The company has performed successfully in Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Guatemala and Mexico.
In 1981, Erwin Schumann opened his own studio and taught in the professional training classes of the CH-Tanztheater PLUS dance theater school and at the Comart. His work shaped the development of interdisciplinary dance theater in Switzerland and inspired a new generation of dancers and choreographers.
