After leaving school, Ruth Oswalt completed a teacher training course and worked as a primary school teacher for a short time. In 1969, she began her acting training at the acting academy, followed by an internship at various theaters in Basel. In 1974, together with her husband Gerd Imbsweiler, she founded the Theater Spilkischte - the first year-round professional theater for children in Switzerland. Since then, Ruth Oswalt has been active as an actress and co-author at Theater Spilkischte, touring regularly at home and abroad and performing at festivals.

In 1987, she and Gerd Imbsweiler attracted a great deal of attention with their version of Die Stühle by Eugène Ionesco, directed by Beat Fäh. Oswalt worked intensively with Beat Fäh until 1996, followed by eight productions with director Antonia Brix. With the play Hänschenklein and the new production Hexenfieber , she completed a tour of several weeks through the new federal states in Germany in 1992. Her play Struwwelväter, which tells the story of the Oswalt family, premiered in 2011.

Ruth Oswalt was awarded the Art Prize of the City of Basel in1987 and the Hans Reinhart Ring in 1999 for her artistic work.
