Jürg Ackermann trained as a dancer at the Sigurd Leeder School of Dance in Herisau from 1970 to 1975 and also attended summer courses with Mary Hinkson, Hans Züllig and Jean Cébron. From 1975, he initially worked with Jiolia Pyrokakoy and Christine Anliker in his first dance group.
In 1976, he founded a larger ensemble, which was given the name Choreo 77 after its first major success in Nyon in 1977. This collective of dancers in changing line-ups performed their own and other people's works, solos and group dances, thus pioneering free dance creation in Switzerland. Choreo 77 existed until 1981 and performed in Switzerland, Austria, Greece and France.
